The Byzantine Empire

Most people know ancient Rome. Far fewer know what came after it. The Byzantine Empire was the eastern half of the Roman Empire, and it survived for over a thousand years after the western half collapsed. Based in the magnificent city of Constantinople, the Eastern Roman Empire gave the world iconic Byzantine architecture, a legal code that still influences modern law today, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, which has hundreds of millions of followers worldwide. Welcome to the medieval civilization your textbook skipped.
